The Book Thief

Since my life isn't too exciting right now I thought I would post on books that I am reading or have read. I just finished The Book Thief which I found surprisingly good. I bought it to read on a long train ride and although I found it a little annoying at first I ended up really liking it. It is about a young girl growing up in Nazi Germany and the story is told through the viewpoint of Death. I thought it was going to be really lame but it was good and even made me cry. I recommend it for an easy, fast read.

Now I am reading No Country for Old Men by Cormac McCarthy, my new favorite writer. I read The Road not so long ago and it is my new favorite book. If you haven't read it, read it right now before they make a movie out of it. I get chills just thinking about it. After reading that I read All the Pretty Horses and the other two books in the trilogy, also by him. The middle one I didn't like at all, (I believe called The Crossing) the last was good and I loved All the Pretty Horses. After having taken a little break from him I am back and reading the before mentioned title. So far I like it-although I find myself getting confused. Final verdict will come shortly. I also read The Ice Cream War by someone else which I did not like so much and Remainder by someone (Matthew?) McCarthy and I am pretty sure I liked it but I can't for the life of me remember what it is about! I tend to do that with books-I forget them as soon as I finish them. Not sure this is a good trait in a librarian.

Have two interviews this week. Wish me luck!

Heath Ledger

I am not sure why but news of his death really upset me. I learnt of it on my commute this morning into work. I was reading the back of some man's newspaper and literally gasped out loud when I came to the story of his overdose. (the man looked at me funny, I offered an apologetic smile) His death seems so tragic to me. I think it might be because it appears to have been accidental and he was so young. I saw an interview of him once on Opera (I don't know why I was watching Opera-I never watch Opera!) and he just seemed really really nice. (And ok, hot.) I had a certain respect for him. The man just wanted some sleep-so sad.

In other news I am still looking for a job. I can't even get a crappy admin job! Slim pickings out there. Part of the problem is I am not a resident and they are afraid I will flee the country at any time. I try to assure them I am not going anywhere but they seem to think I am lying. Hmph

On my way to LA this April we are stopping in Death Valley. Does anyone know of a nice place to stay-or even a decent place to stay? Coming from Las Vegas and the searches I have done so far have come up with depressing results. It makes me nervous when a hotel won't publish photos of their premises!

Please don't vote for Hillary!

Christmas

Although Christmas was what, two weeks ago?, this is the first chance I have had to post! Went to Poole for the holidays which is in Dorset on the coast and spent Christmas with the Partners. A very nice Christmas indeed. We all stayed in Martin's flat which was a little cozy but not so cozy we felt cramped. The weather was very cold but the first few days we were there we managed no rain and so enjoyed walks along the harbor and bike rides to the beach. We didn't do a whole lot, which seems to be the trend with the holidays. Just ate a lot, drank some, lounged about, focused our attention on the very cute and charming baby present and watched the beautiful sunsets. The Partners all seem to like sweets as much as the Mooneys so I didn't have to feel too bad about my constantly nibbling on sweets. I made a nut roast for Christmas dinner which I thought was yummy. There was a turkey present and a big feast was had. Not a whole lot to report really. It was very nice and I felt very fortunate that if I couldn't spend the holidays with my family I got to spend it with such a nice one. Martin and I stayed on until new years which was equally non-eventful. Just made dinner and watched the fireworks on TV. Looking at my pictures I realize I don't really have any! (as you can tell) Funny how you think you are documenting an event and really you aren't.

Now I am looking for a new job and hoping one will come along my way soon. It has been really cold of late and I can't believe how much longer I have to wait until Spring. Have started running again and aiming to do a half marathon in March. There is one early March but not sure I am going to be ready for that. The break from running was nice but I am already enjoying getting back into it. It will be even better once I get a real job and can afford the gym again! Started to plan my trip home and really really excited to see everyone. When is someone going to come visit me???
